WHY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS NEED MORE PMPs

“As you are working with international organizations, you also have a commitment to quality delivery of your projects, and as a professional, you also want to make sure you are not just doing business as usual, but you are really doing something that matters.”
Jeremiah Ngalla – Senior Grants Manager at IRC

Jeremiah Ngalla is a Project Management Professional (PMP) -certified professional who currently works within the development industry as a Senior Grants Manager at International Rescue Committee (IRC); an NGO with a mission to help people affected by humanitarian crises, to survive, recover and rebuild their lives. Jeremiah is passionate about inclusive and sustainable access to health care, education, and economic opportunities.

His career began in Information Technology, where he had very little experience in working in projects, this meant not having the adequate knowledge and skills in managing projects, “Before I started taking on employment, I would do my own freelance projects as an I.T consultant and would run through glitches at some point, which now I can see where attributed to limited skills in managing projects.”

WHY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS NEED MORE PMPs

Although he grew in his career over the years reaching the position of senior grants manager, Jeremiah was still challenged to grow further in his career. His motivation to be different, gain new skill sets, and better manage projects, are what inspired him to secure additional training and become PMP Certified. “As you are working with international organizations, you also have a commitment to quality delivery of your projects, and as a professional, you also want to make sure you are not just doing business as usual, but you are really doing something that matters.”

After being PMP certified, Jeremiah saw an improvement in engaging new partners as a Senior Grants Manager of IRC, “The whole process of stakeholder management that we learned in the PMP played a very important role in how I’d work and engage with partners, to ensure we come up with a good project or input that would produce a good project design.” And despite being told that the course is going to be difficult, Jeremiah testified that it was straightforward and it wasn’t as difficult as he had been told.

WHY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS NEED MORE PMPs

The demand for PMP-certified professionals continues to rise. The Project Management Institute (PMI) projects a need for nearly 88 million individuals in project management-related roles by 2027 (PMI,  2017). That rise in demand calls for professionals across industries to upskill in project management and secure opportunities.

A PMP certification under your belt will signal to your employers, clients, and relevant stakeholders a dedication to growth. Although It is challenging to gain the certification, doing so will also show a level of commitment and dedication since your journey will require enough hours of study and preparation for the exams. However, by having a dedication to mastering project management materials and methodologies you’ll be well prepared for success.

As a PMP-certified professional, regardless of your industry, you’ll increase your value in the market and open yourself to global opportunities. You will gain important hard and soft skills such as resources management, communication, team management, problem-solving, conflict resolution, time management, leadership, and organizational management

In a team setting, respect is earned but also given. View each person as a key contributor to the success of a project and therefor decision maker with valuable inputs. To foster respect, ensure that you have a culture that welcomes different perspectives and diversity of thoughts.

Jeremiah advises practitioners in the development industry to become PMP Certified. “It’s going to empower them with the kind of skills that have been tested across the globe” The skills acquired are also transferable across industries and different projects. Jeremiah doubted if the PMP training would fit the development industry.

But his doubt was cleared since the training was tailor-made to cover a variety of industries. Projects handled by PMPs are most often executed on time and on budget, delivering the required outputs.
