However, most students have little to no knowledge of the realities of the job marketplace. Even though they spend 3 years or more in university, they gain adequate technical skills in their field, but they are barely being prepared for the job market and its complexities.
For example, once they have graduated, they come to realize that they are expected to be experienced and capable of delivering to the market standards.
You see, many students are coming out of universities and expecting the system to absorb them. But that usually doesn’t happen. According to Tanzania Employment Services Agency (TAESA), 800,000 – 1,000,000 students graduate each year, and the labor market can only absorb 150,000 of them. This shows a high rate of unemployment among graduates.
Graduates lucky to gain employment are still experiencing sensory overload from the technical jargons to use of systems and performance expectations, the workplace proves to be totally different from the classroom. It’s a new culture, a new way of doing things, and graduates don’t feel like they were well prepared for it.
The Future Project Professional
On the 7th of Feb 2022 HEBO Consult a Project management consulting firm and PMI®’s Authorized Training Partner launched “The Future Project Professional” program intended to empower graduates with project management and other vital soft skills. The program is geared towards upskilling graduating university students, including undergraduates or post-graduates.
The event was held at Regency Park Hotel, and it brought together student leaders and representatives from different Universities and associations in Dar es Salaam. Attending students were majoring in diverse fields; from Finance to Engineering, Architecture to I.T and even Healthcare to be brief
From their response, the knowledge and skills proved to be highly needed all across when the program was presented to the University students during the launch.
In testament, when asked about this need, Andrew M. Mchomvu, one of the student representatives leader from IFM answered, “The biggest challenge behind employment is the nature of the environment. The environment has changed and currently, the population is high. Also, the advancement of science and technology has replaced the workforce in many jobs.”
Ms. Bulla, the Director of Training at HEBO Consult subsequently shared her own career journey that caught everyone’s attention as it showed insights into how youth can differentiate themselves in the job market and grow in diverse fields through applying global project management skills and standards, among other aspect..
She talked about her 16 years of experience in project management, explaining how she has worked in a wide range of industries (i.e., tech, construction, finance, banking, and real estate) and in that time she has managed to grow within them in different projects.
She accredited her success to the different skillset and certifications she acquired early on in her career, hence making her globally competent, and getting the opportunity to work with the government and some of the top financial and telecommunications organizations
Here’s what she said, “… Those are the things these organizations are looking for (skills). Even in the government, which is the biggest employer we have, such (skill-building) programs are not very common or famous. These (skill-building) programs are practical, on top of what you have already learned in your university degrees.”
Ms. Mdope, A Career Coach and Recruiter from Bloom Consultancy and Development, also emphasized that the real problem behind unemployment is a lack of practical skillsets that can help graduates provide on-demand value as employees in the marketplace.
